How to play Zootactics

The Basics

Here are the basic concepts of the game:

Winning the game

A player wins under either of these conditions:
  1. A player has accumulated 300+ points
  2. A player has taken 8 of the opponent's 10 game pieces

The Game Board

The Zootactics game board is a 5 x 5 grid. When the game begins, your game pieces will occupy the two rows at the bottom of the screen.

The Game Pieces

Each player begins with 10 game pieces.

Statistics

Each game piece has three statistics, represented by the colors Red, Green, and Blue. One of these values will always be 0, and the others will add up to 100. During the game, the Red-Green-Blue values will alternate to form the attack rating of a game piece.
The Tiger game piece has a Red value of 25 and a Green value of 75.
The Boar game piece has a Red value of 50 and a Blue value of 50.

Attack Ratings

The attack rating identifies how powerful the game piece is during a particular turn. This value will constantly change between turns. The attack rating measures the most points that a piece can earn if used in a battle. A game piece with an attack rating of 0 will be unable to attack another piece.

The Rock

Each player begins the game with 9 animal pieces and 1 rock. The rock piece cannot attack or be captured. It may be moved to an open space to act as a blocker.

Battles

Battles occur when a player moves a game piece into a square occupied by an opposing game piece. There can be several outcomes:

Once a battle is finished, the turn will end.

The Color Cycle

The game board has 3 color states: Red, Green, and Blue. With each move, the color state is changed, and each game piece adopts an attack rating according to the current color. For example, a game piece with Red:25 Green:75 Blue:0 will alternate between attack ratings of 25, 75, and 0. For each game piece, the attack rating of the next turn is displayed in small gray text next to the game piece.
This piece is 75 now, but will be 25 during the opponent's turn.
